Pennsylvania Healthcare workers at high risk for injury

We probably don't think much about the number of on-the-job health risks that the average worker needs to face. Healthcare workers, for example, are affected by illness or workplace injuries more than just about any other profession - including construction and mining.

Workplace illnesses for nurses and doctors would not be surprising because of healthcare workers' exposure to physical sickness on a daily bases. However, illnesses are not as common as workplace injuries for healthcare workers. This especially applies healthcare workers being stuck with needles which can expose healthcare workers to any number of healthcare risks (infections, disease and lacerations).

Injuries on the workplace can be particularly devastating in that often such injuries result in significant wage loss - wages being the reason that employees are taking on onerous tasks to begin with. Such injuries also can result in the prospect of not being able to return to your job. Such injuries can thus lead to long term economic losses on the part of the individual injured and his or her family. Individuals injured on the workplace do need to know all of their options to better their status.

There are a number of programs that can be implemented both in the healthcare industry and elsewhere that can reduce workplace strains and lead to a safer work environment. Some of this involves the hiring of safety coordinators that design a series of procedures that will cut down on workplace injuries. One such coordinator pointed out that accidents do not have to "just happen" in the healthcare industry. However, the healthcare industry is still greatly behind other industries in implementing employee safety.
