Minnesota records 10th fungal meningitis case

A woman who received an injection of steroids is now being treated for fungal meningitis. The 60-year-old woman who got the injection at Medical Advanced Pain Specialists is the 10th case in the state of Minnesota to develop fungal meningitis. Medical Advance Pain Specialists is one of two offices to confirm receiving shipments of the steroids from the New England Compounding Center.

The New England Compounding Center is responsible for shipping contaminated steroids to 24 states that are now reporting cases of fungal meningitis. Fungal meningitis is linked to a fungus tainting the vials of methylprednisolone acetate, an epidural steroid given for pain. Fungal meningitis affects the membranes around the brain and spinal cord lining. The company has since recalled all of its products and stopped production while being investigated for sterility. Three lots of the vials were shipped out, so far over 300 cases and 25 deaths have been reported because of fungal meningitis.

If you or a loved one has experienced symptoms like fever, nausea and vomiting, stiff neck, headache, pain and swelling at the site of the injection, slurred speech, vision changes, weakness and numbness and had received a steroid injection one to four weeks prior to noticing symptoms you should consult a health care provider as soon as possible. Patients are reporting these symptoms but they seem to appear one to four weeks after an injection and are similar but milder than the symptoms of other types of meningitis. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have released a list with the offices that have received bad steroids.
