Meningitis outbreak spreads to 19 states with case in Rhode Island

The current outbreak of fungal meningitis has reached its 19th state. The first case in the state of Rhode Island has been reported. Out of the 23 states who received shipments of steroids from the New England Compounding Center, only four have yet to report an actual case of fungal meningitis. The deadly fungal meningitis is being linked to contaminated steroids that were shipped from the New England Compounding Center, located in Framingham, Massachusetts. Three lots of methylprednisolone acetate, tainted by a fungus were distributed throughout the United States and patients are developing fungal meningitis.

The New England Compounding Center has stopped production and has recalled all of its products while under investigation. Two other pharmacies in Massachusetts are also undergoing investigations as well.

Fungal meningitis occurs when the membranes of the brain and spinal cord lining are affected by a type of fungus. Symptoms like fever, headache, nausea and vomiting, numbness, weakness, pain and swelling at the injection site, stiff neck, slurred speech and changes in vision have been reported by patients. Patients are also at risk for developing problems in their joints. If they received an injection in their joints, knees or shoulders they can develop long term problems and even need joint replacement surgery if it worsens. If you or a loved one received a steroid injection and think that you might be at risk for developing fungal meningitis, you are urged to seek help from your health care provider and get the proper treatment if needed as soon as possible.
