Doctor center of more than 80 medical malpractice claims

Approximately 80 medical malpractice claims were settled for more than $33 million, and the cases all revolve around the treatment of patients by one particular individual. Apparently, an anesthesiologist falsified credentials in order that that he could perform a surgical procedure that ultimately injured a number of patients.

This doctor performed a procedure where he would inject patients with cement to the spine. A nurse that confronted the doctor concerning these surgical procedures was told to not interfere. A health insurance provider also had concerns about the procedures, but the insurance company was threatened with a lawsuit by the hospital employing the doctor if it did not pay for these procedures.

According to reports, many of the patients of this particular doctor now suffer from debilitating pain. Other patients have suffered partial paralysis, and some have lost control of their bladder and bowel functions.

Apparently, another physician had given this doctor the benefit of the doubt, but now believes that he was misled by the doctor's false statements concerning the doctor's medical qualifications. Unfortunately, it is believed that this doctor has now been hired on as a senior flight surgeon for the U.S. Air Force.

It's remarkable that such a circumstance could have gotten so out of hand, and it's not surprising that so many lawsuits have been filed by attorneys against the hospital where the doctor was employed. No doctor should have such authority that his or her work cannot be second guessed, and ultimately the hospital that employs the doctor must make certain that the individuals it employs are qualified to perform the duties for which they were hired.

The state of Pennsylvania has standards for the conditions under which a doctor should practice medicine. Hopefully, a similar occurrence as mentioned above will never happen here.
