Pennsylvania high among asbestos deaths

Pennsylvania is one of the eight states with the highest number of mesothelioma deaths reported as a result of asbestos exposure, and these eight states are associated with more than half of such deaths in the United States. Mesothelioma is an extremely deadly form of cancer affecting the lining of the heart lungs and abdomen.

As workers across many different types of industries are at risk for developing mesothelioma, federal restrictions have been placed upon asbestos since the 1970s. However, because the consequences of such exposure are not immediately apparent, many individuals exposed before such restrictions took place are now showing signs of asbestos-related diseases.

Construction sites, oil refineries, power plants, shipyards, chemical plants, aluminum plants, metal works and steel mills are where asbestos has been found in abundance. Asbestos products have also been heavily used on ships and in naval shipyards.

It is because the use of asbestos is so widespread in so many industries and the dangers of asbestos were so well known that we now have so much litigation. There is no price tag that can be put on the contracting of an incurable cancer. Lawyers only bring these lawsuits because family members have suffered such a devastating loss and likely have few resources left after watching a loved one die after years of illness.

Such litigation is complicated by the fact that asbestos exposure may have occurred so long ago. Industries would like to hide their disregard of worker safety by citing a lack of regulations concerning asbestos more than 40-years ago. Yet if the industry did not study the safety risks for workers before placing them at risk, such industries should be held liable for the damage they have caused. Such industries made billions of dollars of the use of asbestos.
