More risks found in taking Prilosec

A few years ago a University of Pennsylvania study suggested that use of the drug Prilosec and other proton pump inhibitors was related to an increased risk of hip fracture. Now it has been found that Prilosec and other such inhibitors may also be tied to chronic diarrhea and severe intestinal problems.

Prilosec is the generic name for a medication that is used to treat acid reflux and stomach ulcers and is heavily advertised in the media. The FDA has recently issued warnings concerning these types of drugs. Individuals that took the medication were found by the FDA to have almost three times the number of cases of severe diarrhea. This new information along with prior reports of the prevalence of hip fractures illustrate that this may be a defective drug due to the adverse side effects.

We've mentioned before on this site the tremendous resources that drug manufacturers have to fight product liability lawsuits brought against them by injured parties and their lawyers. Those same financial resources can and should go into product research by such companies so that such companies are aware of the adverse risks of taking a particular medication. Drug companies thus should know of potential side effects in taking particular medications and should warn users about those risks.

One thing that is seldom mentioned is that the drug companies also can use their funds to lobby legislators to approve medications that they may not have thoroughly tested. Thus popular medications are released upon the market that may not be safe.

Prilosec is just one of many drugs that has with it potential side effects. However, users of such medications need to be aware of the benefits and the risks of such drugs so they can make informed choices before taking the medication.
