JENNIFER MODELL: SSI is for individuals of low income who are disabled. SSD is for individuals who have worked five out of the last 10 years and have accumulated enough work credits to be eligible for disability insurance benefits.
KEVIN W. LEE: Many individuals who become disabled from a life-changing injury are not aware that they may be able to receive Social Security Disability benefits, either in conjunction with workers' compensation benefits or a third-party liability claim.
JENNIFER MODELL: Individuals are eligible for disability if they have a disability that lasts one year or more or results in death. Social Security views disability as an inability to engage in any work activity at all.
KEVIN W. LEE: So we make sure that any time we talk to somebody with serious injuries that we address the issues that they've come to us for, if that's workers' compensation or a motor vehicle collision or something like that, that we let them know that they may be entitled to Social Security Disability benefits, too.
