DANIEL K. BRICMONT: The Heart and Lung Act is a disability benefit for public safety sector employees, so firefighters, police, and also some related occupations, such as correctional officers at the state prisons. And it provides for a disability benefit, which is equal to your actual salary. As compared to the workers' compensation law, which generally provides a benefit of two-thirds of your salary, the Heart and Lung Act pays a benefit of full salary. And it's thought that this higher benefit will attract people to serve in those more dangerous and injury-prone occupations, like firefighting and police work. But the benefit is limited only to those occupations that are specified in the heart and lung statute. So again, for someone in a public safety position, you always want to investigate if they can fall in the purview of that law to receive the higher benefit rate.
