DAVID A. MCGOWAN: Coal tar pitch is a chemical that is derived from crude coal tar. The two most notable uses for coal tar pitch are for the aluminum smelting process in lining the smelting cells in which aluminum is made into molten aluminum. The other very frequent and more prevalent use of coal tar pitch is in the roofing industry. All of your flat roofs that you see that are made with tar, that is what coal tar pitch is. Over the course of the 1800s, a lot of scientists were finding that exposure of coal tar pitch on the skin of test animals was creating cancer. It is now clear that kidney cancer, bladder cancer, lung cancer, and skin cancer are four primary diseases that can be caused by chronic and long-term exposure to coal tar pitch.
